Girls In Juvenile Detention Caught Up: Girls Surveillance And Wraparound Incarceration (Gender And Justice 2)

In recent years, the issue of girls' involvement in the juvenile justice system has gained significant attention. Girls, particularly those from marginalized communities, are increasingly subjected to surveillance and wraparound incarceration. This article explores the intersection of gender and justice, shedding light on the challenges faced by young girls in the criminal justice system.

The Gender Gap in Surveillance

Research has shown that girls are often subjected to more intense surveillance compared to boys. This disparity is driven by societal gender norms and stereotypes. Critics argue that girls are disproportionately targeted by the criminal justice system, leading to a cycle of incarceration rather than rehabilitation. The use of electronic monitoring, probation, and other forms of surveillance further exacerbate these concerns.

Wraparound Incarceration: A Vicious Cycle

Wraparound incarceration refers to the system of detention and probation that keeps girls involved in the juvenile justice system for extended periods. Rather than addressing the root causes of their behavior or providing appropriate support, this approach perpetuates the cycle of incarceration. Girls are often punished for behaviors that stem from trauma, exploitation, or lack of access to basic services.

The Impact of Marginalization

Marginalized communities, including girls of color and those from lower-income backgrounds, bear the brunt of the surveillance and wraparound incarceration system. Systemic biases and racial profiling contribute to the over-policing and criminalization of young girls. These practices not only disrupt their lives but limit their future opportunities.

Breaking the Cycle: Reform and Rehabilitation

It is crucial to address the root causes of girls' involvement in the juvenile justice system. Focusing on prevention, trauma-informed care, and community-based alternatives can help break the cycle of surveillance and wraparound incarceration. By providing comprehensive support and resources, we can empower girls to overcome adversity and lead fulfilling lives.

The Role of Education and Empathy

Education plays a vital role in empowering girls and dismantling the barriers they face. Promoting educational opportunities inside juvenile detention centers and ensuring access to quality education upon reintegration can significantly contribute to their future success. Additionally, fostering empathy and understanding within the criminal justice system can aid in providing fair and equitable treatment for all young girls.

A Call to Action

Girls surveillance and wraparound incarceration are pressing issues that require immediate attention and action. Advocacy, policy reform, and community support are essential in challenging the existing system and advocating for gender- and trauma-responsive approaches. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all girls, regardless of their backgrounds, are treated with dignity, respect, and given the opportunity to thrive.

In , the intersection of gender and justice is a complex and multifaceted issue, particularly when it comes to girls' involvement in the juvenile justice system. Girls surveillance and wraparound incarceration perpetuate cycles of incarceration and hinder rehabilitation efforts. By addressing the root causes, promoting education, and advocating for gender-responsive policies, we can work towards a more just and equitable system for all girls.

From home, to school, to juvenile detention center, and back again. Follow the lives of fifty Latina girls living forty miles outside of Los Angeles, California, as they are inadvertently caught up in the school-to-prison pipeline. Their experiences in the connected programs between “El Valle” Juvenile Detention Center and “Legacy” Community School reveal the accelerated fusion of California schools and institutions of confinement. The girls participate in well-intentioned wraparound services designed to provide them with support at home, at school, and in the detention center. But these services may more closely resemble the phenomenon of wraparound incarceration, in which students, despite leaving the actual detention center, cannot escape the surveillance of formal detention, and are thereby slowly pushed away from traditional schooling and a productive life course.
