When I was 20 I would have never believed it if you told me that I would be the author of this book. I was utterly clueless about girls and relationships. In fact, I even felt somewhat “autistic” when it came to romantic relationships. I didn’t have sex before I was 18 and then my very first relationship with a girl who was just about as inexperienced as I was, left me traumatized for the next couple of years. I guess it must have been a case of PTSD: I kept seeing her face in crowds everywhere, I couldn’t get involved in another romantic relationship until my mid-20s and I became afraid of being touched by people (haphephobia). Least of all I couldn’t understand why some guys who didn’t have serious intentions at all got a lot of girls and I, who would take every relationship seriously, couldn’t get any. Some guys seemed to have all the luck, and some guys, like me, seemed to be born losers.

You might think now “Why the hell does this guy write a book about romantic relationships if he is as clueless as I am?”. Well, exactly because of that. My inability to attract a mate set me on a lifelong quest to understand my own life. I read dozens of self-help and scientific books about relationships. As you can imagine, they didn’t really help me find a partner. But, getting into evolutionary psychology helped me better understand the dynamics of mate-choice and mating. I did eventually find a wonderful partner in far far away Russia after what seemed an odyssey. I have four children, who I dearly love, but it was really when my wife and I started to have problems in our relationship that the “some guys have all the luck” phenomenon started to keep my mind busy again. Yes, some people do indeed have more stable relationships, others those infamous on and off relationships and others none at all.

I have met and talked to so many people who basically have resigned and decided that relationships and having kids aren’t for them. The sad thing, those people are actually among the nicest people I have met. It’s those people who would make great “dads” rather than the “cads” who can’t find a partner. This is not a book about how to chat up a girl and about the best pickup lines - like previously, I am utterly hopeless when it comes to this part of relationships. This book is for “late bloomers” like me. I will explain why it’s harder for us to attract a mate and what to look for in a mate. The best thing: your chances are best when you are authentic, no need to pretend to be someone else (you would most likely end up with the wrong kind of partner). Of course, if you suffer from social anxiety like I used to, you will have to learn how to become more self-confident, but you shouldn’t become a macho type either, because late bloomers just aren’t born to be machos.
