For more than two decades, Magic: The Gathering has been a staple in the world of trading card games. As someone who has been a passionate player and collector since its inception, I can't help but reminisce about my 20-year gaming journey with this addictive and thrilling game.

It all started in the late 90s when a friend introduced me to Magic: The Gathering. Little did I know that this would ignite a lifelong passion and immerse me into a deep and intricate world of spell-casting, strategy, and camaraderie.

From the moment I played my first game, I was captivated by the intricate artwork on the cards, the complex mechanics, and the limitless possibilities that the game offered. I quickly became addicted to building decks, mastering the various card types, and outwitting my opponents with cunning strategies.

As the years went by, my collection of Magic cards grew exponentially. I was always on the hunt for rare and powerful cards, eager to add them to my ever-expanding arsenal. I found joy in trading with other players, attending tournaments, and testing my skills against new opponents. Magic became more than just a game; it became a way of life.

One of the aspects that sets Magic: The Gathering apart from other games is the continuous release of new expansions and sets. Each new release brought with it a wave of excitement and anticipation as players eagerly awaited to discover new cards, mechanics, and strategies. The game never grew stale or repetitive; instead, it evolved and reinvented itself over the years, keeping players like myself hooked and engaged.

Part of the allure of Magic is the social aspect it brings. The game has a vibrant and thriving community that spans across the globe. I have forged numerous friendships and formed lifelong bonds with fellow players who share the same passion and love for the game. Magic tournaments became not just a chance to compete, but also an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who understood the thrill of the game.

The addiction to Magic: The Gathering extended far beyond the physical cards. Online platforms and digital adaptations allowed me to play the game anytime, anywhere. Whether it was testing new decks online, participating in virtual tournaments, or engaging in lively discussions on Magic forums, the accessibility and convenience of the digital realm broadened the horizons of my gaming journey.

Over the years, Magic: The Gathering evolved and adapted to cater to different playstyles and preferences. Whether you're a casual player seeking fun and lighthearted games or a competitive player striving for glory and recognition, Magic offers a breadth of options to suit all types of players.

It is impossible to summarize 20 years of my gaming journey with Magic: The Gathering in a single article. The memories, experiences, and emotions that I have collected along the way are countless. Magic has been my escape, my passion, and my addiction. It has taught me resilience, critical thinking, resource management, and above all, the importance of pursuing what brings you joy.

As I continue my journey with Magic, I eagerly look forward to new expansions, new friendships, and new experiences. Magic: The Gathering will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I can confidently say that it has shaped me into the person I am today.

So, if you're looking for a game that combines strategy, creativity, and a thriving community, give Magic: The Gathering a try. But remember, be prepared to embark on a lifelong addiction and an unforgettable gaming journey.

What does it mean to be competitive, and to put all of yourself into a competitive activity?

I have played
Magic: The Gathering for twenty years. I have traveled around the world to play all over North America, Europe, and China. I have had lots of fun, and made incredible friends, along the way. But I have also experienced feelings of anguish, frustrations, and self-doubt.

Many years later, I have come to be at peace with myself. I have developed a framework for controlling my emotions in the heat of competition. I wrote my story so that it can be shared with you.

Playing
Magic is not a requirement for enjoying this book. Struggle is universal, and can apply to any activity you are passionate about.

I welcome you to take the journey with me, and learn more about yourself in the process.

Praise for Magic: The Addiction

“Reading this book took me back through my own journey as a Magic player. The experiences detailed here spoke to me and I finished the book in a single reading.

I would recommend this book to Magic players and non-Magic players alike, as the author paints a compelling picture regardless of your familiarity with the source material. It's a tale of just how fully this game can grab you, and what that can lead to – from the positives of building relationships and finding a challenging mental pursuit to the dark side of obsession.”

—Luis Scott-Vargas, Professional Magic Player, Hall of Famer and 7-time Pro Tour Top 8 Finalist

“More than any author before him, James perfectly captures the very essence of what it means to suffer from the competitive drive. His brutally honest and highly entertaining reflections on two decades of worldwide gaming have been an eye-opening journey of discovery for me.”

—Julian Knab, Magic Player and 2013 Bazaar of Moxen Paris Winner

“James tells a clear and captivating story that resonated a lot with me given my upbringing as an Asian-American Magic player.”

—Jarvis Yu, Magic Player, 2015 Grand Prix Seattle Winner and 9-time Pro Tour Qualifier

“James's take on what drives Magic players to compete is vital and fresh in a media climate that either takes it for granted or portrays it as completely insane.”

—Chris Morris-Lent, Author, A Brief History of Magic Cards
