Quick Guide To Using And Understanding Non Binary Pronouns | My Non Binary Child
As society progresses and becomes more inclusive, it is important for us to understand and respect different gender identities. One such identity is non-binary, which refers to individuals who do not exclusively identify as male or female. In this quick guide, we will explore non-binary pronouns and how to use them when referring to individuals who identify as non-binary.
What are Non Binary Pronouns?
Non-binary pronouns are alternative pronouns that go beyond the traditional binary male/female pronouns (he/she). They are used to refer to individuals who identify as non-binary. Non-binary pronouns aim to provide a space for individuals to express their gender identity outside the confines of the gender binary.
Traditionally, pronouns like "he/him" and "she/her" are used to refer to individuals based on their perceived gender. However, non-binary individuals often feel overlooked or misgendered by these pronouns because they do not identify strictly as male or female. This is where non-binary pronouns come in to provide inclusivity and recognition for their identity.

Examples of Non Binary Pronouns
Non-binary pronouns can vary from person to person, as individuals may choose pronouns that resonate with their personal identity. Here are some commonly used non-binary pronouns:
- They/Them/Theirs
- Ze/Zir/Zirs
- Xe/Xem/Xyrs
- Ve/Ver/Vis
It's important to note that the examples provided are not an exhaustive list and that individuals may create or select their unique non-binary pronouns.
Using Non Binary Pronouns Respectfully
When interacting with non-binary individuals, it is crucial to use their preferred pronouns respectfully. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind:
- Listen and ask: If you are unsure about someone's pronouns, it is best to ask politely. By actively listening and respecting their choice, you avoid assumptions and misgendering.
- Practice and normalization: Make an effort to use non-binary pronouns appropriately and encourage others to do the same. By normalizing the use of non-binary pronouns, we create an inclusive environment.
- Mistakes happen: It is possible to make mistakes when learning new pronouns, especially if they are unfamiliar to you. If you do make a mistake, gracefully apologize and make an effort to correct it for the future.
- Advocate for inclusivity: Stand up against discrimination and promote inclusivity in all spaces. Educate others about the importance of non-binary pronouns and gender identities, fostering a respectful and accepting society.

Non-binary people have existed since human history was first recorded. Well documented across multiple cultures and continents, their identity is not something recently created; the only thing that has changed in the past few years is the visibility they have gained and the shift towards acceptance from our society. The willingness to accept something that might be hard to understand is crucial to comprehend what exactly is a non-binary identity and how to be adequately supportive of such a person.
Gender is often a baffling subject. However, non-binary people are not at all baffled about their gender identity, and they certainly aren't simply following a new trend. Societies and cultures all around the globe have been recognizing and accepting such identities for thousands of years. There are extensive historical accounts to support this. It's only in the western world that it has been so delayed.
Nonetheless, many people who are comfortable in the gender binary may find it baffling to understand why someone wouldn't wish to adhere to such gender structures. This book will give you a well-rounded understanding of non-binary identities and the proper pronouns for them, teach you how to use them, and broaden your knowledge on a variety of topics such as:
- How to be sympathetic and respectful of non-binary individuals
- How to properly use the correct non-binary pronouns
- Gender Identity Terms
- What to avoid and what to adopt
- Why pronouns matter
And many more things, such as a brief history of gender identity and non-binary people in society and how it is to be a non-binary person when it comes to legalities. Eventually, you will be able to understand how to support and respect your non-binary friends and family!
