The Intricacies of Aquinas' Ontology of the Material World That Will Amaze You

When exploring theological and philosophical studies, it is impossible to ignore the influential work of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas was a renowned theologian and philosopher who made significant contributions to various fields, including his famous ontology of the material world. In this article, we will delve into the intricacies of Aquinas' ontology, uncovering its profound ideas and implications.
Understanding Aquinas' Ontology
Aquinas' ontology of the material world encompasses his view on the nature and existence of physical entities. According to Aquinas, the material world comprises substances, each possessing their individual essence and existence. He posited that substances could be further classified into different categories, including living things, non-living things, and spiritual beings.
Central to Aquinas' ontology is the concept of hylomorphism, which states that substances are composed of both matter and form. Matter represents the underlying material composition of an entity, while form signifies its specific characteristics and attributes. This duality of matter and form is crucial in understanding the essence of all physical entities, according to Aquinas.

The Five Ways
Aquinas' ontology of the material world is deeply intertwined with his famous Five Ways or Five Proofs for the existence of God. These theological arguments provide support for the existence of God by establishing a connection between causality, motion, necessity, perfection, and the intelligent ordering of the universe.
Through the Five Ways, Aquinas aimed to reconcile the knowledge obtained through reason with the teachings of Christian faith. His ontology serves as a foundation for these proofs, as it outlines the nature of reality, causality, and the interactions between the material and the spiritual.
The Role of God
Within Aquinas' ontology, God plays a fundamental role as the prime mover and ultimate cause. He argued that God is the ultimate source of all existence, and it is through His divine guidance that all things come into being and find their purpose.
Moreover, Aquinas believed that God's existence is evident through the order and harmony observed in the material world. He saw the intricate design and interconnections among beings as a testament to God's wisdom and divine plan.
Implications on Human Existence
Aquinas' ontology of the material world has profound implications for understanding human existence and the nature of the soul. He proposed that humans possess both a material body and an immaterial soul, with the soul being the essence that differentiates us from other creatures.
According to Aquinas, the soul is the form of the body and is responsible for guiding human actions and intellect. It is through the soul that humans are capable of rationality, morality, and achieving their ultimate purpose - communion with God.
Critiques and Contemporary Relevance
While Aquinas' ontology has had a lasting impact on both philosophy and theology, it is not exempt from criticism. Some argue that his reliance on Aristotelian concepts, such as hylomorphism, limits the applicability of his ideas to modern scientific understandings.
However, many contemporary philosophers still find value in Aquinas' ontology, especially in relation to metaphysics, ethics, and the philosophy of religion. His ideas continue to inspire debates and further discussions on the nature of existence, the role of God, and the complexities of the material world.
Aquinas' ontology of the material world remains a fascinating and influential framework for understanding the nature of reality. His ideas on substance, hylomorphism, and the interplay between the material and spiritual realms have left an indelible mark on philosophy, theology, and beyond.
By considering Aquinas' ontology, we are encouraged to explore profound questions about our existence, purpose, and the place of faith in a complex world. Through his work, Aquinas reminds us of the importance of seeking knowledge, embracing reason, and contemplating the divine in our quest to understand the material world and our place within it.

What is the nature of the material world? And how are its fundamental constituents to be described? These questions are of central concern to contemporary philosophers, and in their attempt to answer them, they have begun reconsidering traditional views about metaphysical structure, including the Aristotelian view that material objects are best described as 'hylomorphic compounds'—that is, objects composed of both matter (hyle) and form (morphe).
In this major new study, Jeffrey E. Brower presents and explains the hylomorphic conception of the material world developed by Thomas Aquinas, the most influential Aristotelian of the Middle Ages. According to Brower, the key to understanding Aquinas's conception lies in his distinctive account of intrinsic change. Beginning with a novel analysis of this account, Brower systematically introduces all the elements of Aquinas's hylomorphism, showing how they apply to material objects in general
and human beings in particular. The resulting picture not only sheds new light on Aquinas's ontology as a whole, but provides a wholesale alternative to the standard contemporary accounts of material objects.
In addition to presenting and explaining Aquinas's views, Brower seeks wherever possible to bring them into dialogue with the best recent literature on related topics. Along the way, he highlights the contribution that Aquinas's views make to a host of contemporary metaphysical debates, including the nature of change, composition, material constitution, the ontology of stuff vs. things, the proper analysis of ordinary objects, the truthmakers for essential vs. accidental predication, and the
metaphysics of property possession.
