Discovering Giverny

Giverny, a picturesque village nestled in the verdant French countryside, served as Claude Monet's beloved home from 1883 until his death in 1926. It was in this idyllic setting that the artist found inspiration, transforming his garden into an artistic oasis.

The Birth of Waterlilies

As Monet devoted himself to cultivating his garden, he became captivated by the enchanting water lilies that adorned his pond. Inspired by their tranquility and unique ability to reflect light, Monet embarked on a series of paintings that aimed to capture their ethereal beauty.

This artistic approach allowed Monet to convey the ever-changing natural surroundings of his garden with unparalleled vitality.

An Exploration of Light and Color

In the Waterlilies paintings, Monet experimented with a vast array of shades and hues, skillfully capturing the harmonious symphony of colors present in his garden. By depicting the reflections of the water lilies on the pond's surface, he created a sense of depth and movement, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in his vibrant world.

Legacy and Impressionist Influence

Monet's Waterlilies series left an indelible mark on the art world, not only as a mesmerizing collection but also as a catalyst for the development of modern art. By rejecting the rigid rules of traditional painting and embracing spontaneity and freedom, Monet paved the way for future generations of artists to explore new realms of creativity.

Snappy, incisive to life and later works of one of the world's most popular artists.

A compact new edition with internet links. Towards the end of his life and much inspired by Japanese water gardens, Monet spent a great deal of time in his beloved Giverny. Adorned with poppies, blue sage, dahlias and irises, the waters were disturbed only by bamboos and water lilies. His water garden was originally created to satisfy a need to be near water, and to provide a visual feast that could be enjoyed from his house. The pond was fed by the river Ru, and weeping willow and silver birch hung over its edges, caressing the fronds of the greenery and blossoms below. Its famous green wooden footbridge was built across the water and it became the central focus of many of his works. He said, ‘It took me some time to understand my water lilies. I planted them for pleasure.’ and so he began to work on what is probably the most famous series of paintings the world has ever seen.
