And Other Things My Kids Want But Won't Be Getting
![Jese Leos](https://bookshelfspot.com/author/branden-simmons.jpg)
As a parent, it's no surprise that our children constantly find and desire new things. Whether it's the latest toys, gadgets, or candy, kids always seem to have a never-ending wishlist. However, as much as we want to give our children everything they desire, sometimes it's just not possible. In this article, we'll explore some of the things my kids want but won't be getting anytime soon.
1. The Fancy Toy
4.4 out of 5
Every time we visit the toy store, my kids always gravitate towards the aisle filled with the latest and fanciest toys. These toys often come with flashy lights, sounds, and unique features that instantly grab their attention. No matter how much they beg and plead, I know deep down that these toys will end up forgotten in a corner after just a few days of play. So, as much as they want the fancy toy, they won't be getting it this time.
2. The Expensive Gadget
In today's digital age, gadgets have become a huge part of our lives, and it's no different for kids. From tablets to gaming consoles, my kids often express their desire for the latest and most expensive gadgets on the market. However, I believe that exposing them to excessive screen time at such a young age is detrimental to their development. Therefore, while they may want the expensive gadget, they won't be finding it under the Christmas tree this year.
3. The Sugary Treat
It's no secret that kids love sugary treats - from candies to chocolate bars and everything in between. However, it's important to instill healthy eating habits from a young age. While an occasional treat is fine, my kids won't be finding an endless supply of sugary goodies. Instead, we'll focus on finding healthier alternatives and teaching them the importance of moderation.
4. The Latest Fashion Trend
With social media influencers and celebrities constantly showcasing the latest fashion trends, it's no wonder that kids want to keep up. However, it's essential to teach them the value of individuality and not succumb to peer pressure. While they may desire the latest clothes and accessories, they won't be getting everything they want. Instead, we'll encourage them to express their personal style without relying on brand names.
5. The Extravagant Vacation
Family vacations are a wonderful opportunity to create lasting memories. However, my kids often have grand ideas of going to exotic locations or visiting theme parks around the world. While these dreams may be enticing, reality comes knocking. Extravagant vacations come with a hefty price tag, and we have other financial responsibilities that take precedence. So, as much as they dream about an extravagant vacation, they won't be packing their bags just yet.
While it can be difficult to say no to our children's wishes, it's important to prioritize what truly matters. Teaching them the value of gratitude, learning to appreciate what they have, and understanding the importance of saving are life lessons that will benefit them in the long run. So, despite their desires, my kids won't be getting these things anytime soon. However, I am confident that they will grow up appreciating the simple joys in life and understanding the value of hard work.
Remember, being a parent means making tough decisions, but it also means shaping the character and values of our children. So, even though our kids want these things, we have to stand firm and guide them towards a path of responsible and fulfilling lives.

The comedian, actor, television host, podcast king, and New York Times bestselling author of President Me, Not Taco Bell Material, and In Fifty Years We’ll All Be Chicks now lays down the law on the plight of the modern parent.
Parents, do you often think that if your kids had to grow up the way you did—without iPads, 70-inch flatscreen TVs, American Girl dolls, and wifi in the climate controlled minivan—that they might actually be better off? Do you feel underappreciated or ignored? Do you worry you’re raising a bunch of spoiled softies who will never know how to do anything themselves—because you do everything for them? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need Daddy, Stop Talking.
Adam rips parenthood a new one, telling it straight about what adults must do if they don’t want to have to support their kids forever. Using his own crappy childhood as a cautionary tale, and touting the pitfalls of the kind of helicopter parenting so pervasive today, Daddy, Stop Talking is the only parenting book you should ever read. Here, too, is sage advice to Adam’s own kids—and to future parents—on what matters most: dating; drinking and drugs; buying your first house and car; puberty; and what kind of assholes his kids (and yours) should avoid becoming. Even if his own son and daughter pretty much ignore everything he says, you shouldn’t. And you’re welcome. Again.
