Born in 1896, Raghupati Sahai, the poet Firaq Gorakhpuri is one of the foremost Shayar of Modern Urdu poetry. He was and still is an enigma and had several facets to his personality, like several other renowned Urdu poets such as Ghalib and Majaz, who was Firaq’s contemporary.

Loneliness and quietude of the vast night spent in separation from the beloved forms a dreamy backdrop of several of Firaq’s ghazals and nazms. However, this loneliness and quietude go back to the beginning of mankind. A calm that encapsulated the universe before the big bang.

Firaq has mostly written about love. Not just romantic love, because romance is merely one aspect of love; his love encompasses sentimentality of the entire universe, and it is realistic. It is symbolic, erotic, and enigmatic, and at the same time, practical and worldly. The central themes of all his poems are beauty, love, societal relationships, nature, and philosophy. His poetry has a lovely suppleness, softness, and languor, which is rarely found in the Urdu poetry of that era.
