Chess is a game of strategy, calculation, and foresight. Knowing various tactical moves can greatly enhance your gameplay and help you outwit your opponents. In this article, we will explore 50 chess puzzles focusing on pins, an intermediate tactic that can give you a significant advantage in your games.

What is a Pin in Chess?

A pin occurs when a piece is attacked and cannot move without exposing a more valuable piece behind it. It restricts the movement of the pinned piece and can be a powerful tool in your tactical arsenal. By exploiting pins, you can capture your opponent's valuable pieces, gain a material advantage, and ultimately increase your chances of winning the game.

How to Recognize a Pin?

Recognizing a pin is essential to applying this tactic successfully. A pin typically involves a long-range attacker, such as a queen, bishop, or rook, aligning against a target piece, often an opposing piece of lesser value. The pinned piece is then unable to move, as the loss of the more valuable piece behind it would be disastrous.

This is volume two of the Chess 101 Intermediate Tactics Series, which specifically covers pins. Other books in this series specifically cover forks, skewers, removing the defenders and end games.

Each answer in this book ranges from two to four moves and you must always look to make not only your best move to solve the puzzle, but your opponent’s best move as well. There are no checkmates. You must find the winning tactic that will lead to a won game.

Also, while many chess puzzle books have the reader solving all of the puzzles from the perspective of "white to play", Intermediate Puzzles will challenge the reader to solve puzzles from the perspective of "black to play" as well, which is more realistic.
