The relationships that we will focus on in this book are not of the romantic kind. Some are the bitter, hostile, ferocious, cat-scratching kind that take place in heated tones in doctor’s offices across the world today. In such cases of such ferocity often times due to the natural courses of disease, diagnosed, undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, ignored or treatments, under-treatments, mistreatments, or otherwise, any dialogue is lost and a monologue takes. Others are more tolerant of the patient's opinion and the doctor's opinion, Here, we will examine ten such conversations in patient-doctor relationships.
Each conversation is timed to be about 5-10 minutes long which is the time many physicians are accorded to talk with their patients in a clinic setting in many countries. The conversations in the patient-doctor relationship focus on the patient as the main person of importance as it should always be.
All of the characters in the conversations are fictitious. Yet, the conversations are intended to reflect general themes regarding what patients want from their doctors, but do not necessarily get from those doctors in the patient-doctor relationship. In the real world, the assignment of doctors and patients is often quite random. But one must recognize that each patient may have a completely different view of what he or she wants from his or her doctor in the relationship, at its start, over time, and when it concludes, A relationship can conclude on a high note, on a low note, and most often in between.
Many, perhaps most, patients when assigned to a doctor’s care more or less just accept their assignment by whoever . . . as it is often not clear who does do the assigning, front desk person, with or without discussion with nurse or doctor or administrator, and just show up on the day and at the time assigned for their appointment and just see what transpires.
These monologues are delivered by those patients who want to define their personal patient-doctor relationship they want from the start to see how their doctor reacts and to see whether they can tolerate this doctor or not, or whether they should push for a new assignment to a different physician, change clinics, or even change their hospital or medical center to one more to their liking in terms of their relationship with a doctor for their medical care.
