Psychopaths In Our Lives: My Interviews
![Jese Leos](https://bookshelfspot.com/author/jack-powell.jpg)
The world of psychopaths has always fascinated and terrified us at the same time. While the concept of psychopathy might seem distant and detached from our everyday lives, the truth is that psychopaths walk among us. They can be found in our workplaces, our relationships, and our communities.
Unmasking the Psychopath
As a psychologist interested in exploring the dark side of human behavior, I embarked on a series of interviews with convicted psychopaths. These individuals were carefully selected from prisons around the country, with the consent and cooperation of the authorities.

My goal was to gain a deeper insight into the minds of these individuals, understand the characteristics that define psychopathy, and explore the impact they have on those around them.
The Charisma and Manipulation
During the interviews, I discovered that psychopaths possess an uncanny ability to charm and manipulate others. Their charisma knows no bounds, as they effortlessly deceive and control individuals who come into their lives.
The psychopaths I spoke to emphasized the importance of power and control. They explained how they learned to exploit the vulnerabilities and weaknesses of their victims to gain dominance. It was eerie to witness the calculated nature of their actions and the lack of remorse or empathy.

The Emotional Blankness
One of the most striking characteristics of psychopaths is their emotional blankness. They are unable to feel genuine emotions like love, guilt, or remorse. Instead, they mimic emotions to fit into society and manipulate others.
These interviews shed light on the fact that psychopaths view emotions as tools rather than genuine responses. They explained how they mimic emotional cues to gain trust, but deep down, they remain detached and uncaring.
The Impact on Others
Psychopaths inflict immeasurable harm on those around them. They leave a trail of shattered lives and broken hearts. Their ability to manipulate and control often results in emotional, psychological, and sometimes even physical abuse.
Through my interviews, I spoke with the family members and victims who had suffered at the hands of these psychopaths. Their stories were heart-wrenching and served as a stark reminder that we must remain vigilant in identifying and protecting ourselves from individuals with psychopathic tendencies.
Identifying the Psychopath
While it might be challenging to identify psychopaths in our lives, there are certain red flags and patterns of behavior that we can look out for. These include superficial charm, a grandiose sense of self, a lack of empathy, and a history of manipulative actions.
We must trust our intuition and not ignore the warning signs. By educating ourselves about psychopathy and its traits, we can equip ourselves with the knowledge necessary to protect ourselves and those we care about. Awareness is key.
My interviews with psychopaths opened my eyes to the haunting reality of their existence in our lives. They walk among us, often disguised behind a mask of normalcy. It is crucial that we increase public awareness about psychopathy, educate ourselves about the warning signs, and support the victims who have suffered at their hands.
Together, we can build a safer and more empathetic society, where the influences of psychopaths are minimized, and the well-being of individuals is protected.

Psychopaths in Our Lives contains actual interviews with three psychopaths. We think of serial killers when we hear the word psychopath, but the vast majority are not in prison, but walking among us. Lacking a conscience, they leave a path of destruction and despair as they pass through.
You will read in their own words how they approach relationships, how they manipulate their partners, and what they think about themselves and others.
Which one is your psychopath? The lover who broke your heart? The friend who stole your husband? The neighbor who poisoned your dog? The arrogant boss that flaunts his power? Read their words; hear the narcissism and callous indifference.
Perhaps you already suspect something wrong in your relationship. What can you do? Learn to recognize the behaviors and the tricks that psychopaths use to manipulate their prey. Will you recognize the mind games? Learn about “gaslighting” and the “victim card.” Learn not to trust what seems too good to be true. It probably isn’t.
Quote from the Foreword by Dr. Carl B.Gacono and Dr. Aaron J. Kivisto:
“Given the pull we all experience to understand not only what someone has done, but why they did it, it is perhaps unsurprising that the antisocial syndromes have received so much empirical attention. After the initial reactions of horror and fascination typically elicited by the acts of psychopathic individuals have passed, the question most people struggle with is why.
Contemporary clinical and forensic science has aided in this understanding, beginning with the work of Pinel in the early 1800s and solidified through Cleckley and Hare’s enormous contributions. However, none of these pioneer’s contributions toward our understanding of psychopathic individuals would have been possible without the stories of the psychopaths that they encountered.
It is easy to lose sight of the centrality of these stories, in large part because they are so rarely detailed. In the pages that follow, Dianne Emerson provides readers with the rare opportunity to enter the personal lives of three male psychopaths through their own words. Through the careful organization of their everyday stories of who, what, when and where, Emerson ultimately provides the building blocks for readers to understand why these individuals do what they do. Without such stories, there is little hope for understanding.”
