One of the most popular areas for skiing in Olympic National Park is Hurricane Ridge. Located just 17 miles south of Port Angeles, Hurricane Ridge offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. With an elevation of 5,242 feet, the ridge receives abundant snowfall each year, creating perfect conditions for skiing and snowboarding.

The Hurricane Ridge Ski and Snowboard Area provides a variety of terrain suitable for all skill levels. From gentle slopes for beginners to challenging runs for advanced skiers, there's something for everyone here. Additionally, the area offers rental equipment and lessons for those who are new to the sport or looking to improve their skills.

Exploring Olympic National Park on Skis

While Hurricane Ridge is undoubtedly one of the highlights of skiing in Olympic National Park, there are numerous other areas worth exploring. For the adventurous skiers, backcountry skiing offers a unique opportunity to venture off the beaten path and discover hidden gems within the park.

The Enchanted Valley is one such hidden gem. Accessible only by a challenging 13-mile hike, this remote valley is transformed into a winter paradise during the snowy season. With its towering waterfalls, old-growth forests, and stunning glaciers, the Enchanted Valley is a feast for the eyes as well as a thrilling playground for backcountry skiers.

For those seeking a more relaxed skiing experience, the Sol Duc Hot Springs area is a perfect choice. Surrounded by old-growth forest and featuring natural hot springs, this serene location is an ideal spot for both skiing and relaxation. Soak in the hot springs after a day on the slopes and let the warm water rejuvenate your tired muscles.

Capturing the Beauty: Stunning Images of Olympic National Park

With its glaciated peaks, temperate rain forests, and ocean wilderness, Olympic National Park has been called three parks in one. Efforts to protect and preserve these treasures began with the creation of a federal reserve in 1897, followed by a national monument in 1909, and then Olympic National Park in 1938. The 1920s and 1930s saw the building of many trails, shelters, and roads. In 1934, the US Forest Service completed a primitive road to the summit of Blue Mountain, affording skiing at Deer Park, and in 1957, the National Park Service completed an improved road to Hurricane Ridge. These two areas have offered alpine (lift-assisted) skiing to several generations. While these roads remain today, the recognition of the value of preserved wilderness has stopped road construction. In 1988, most of the park became federally designated wilderness. In 1981, Olympic National Park was designated a World Heritage Site.
