Lonnie Johnson is a musician, empath, touring stage tech, and emerging photographer. He has traveled an adventurous path through life and the United States where he has faced many opportunities and personal challenges that have helped him grow as a person, both in his musical abilities and in his emotional connection to other people struggling with their own hardships. Lonnie has taken his own experiences of facing homelessness, addiction, and the loss of his mother, and found a creative and healing outlet to share with the world, hoping it might find a way to help someone else in a similar situation.
Music and creativity play a vital role in the life of an empathic person, as it has the ability to calm the mind and allow a person to express their frustrations and energy. Lonnie picked up his first bass guitar when he was 15 and never wanted to put it down. He now has an extensive background in the music industry, both on-stage in the spotlights and working silently in the wings and back corners His experiences have given him the opportunity to visit many different cities, explore new music venues with back stage doors hidden in alleyways, and meet a range of musicians, fans, and stage crews from all walks of life.
As an empath, Lonnie feels a connection to the emotions and souls of people that he meets. When taking pictures, he has tried to show a little of what he sees to the viewer. Most people in large cities tend to talk past homeless people without giving them a second thought. Hopefully the images can bring the hidden, into the light, and share a few of the stories he has learned along the way.
Lonnie has reached out and found his own help and support through family and friends, and has begun a new chapter in his life, letting go of the pain and hardships of his past towards something new. He has found a connection to photography that allows him to share experiences of people who have also experienced major hardships and struggles in their lives. The images that he shared in his book bring some of the hidden lives and images out of the back alleys in order to be seen and heard.
But when the stage lights go down, and fans head back home, there is a whole other community of people that you may never see. These people, who live in the streets and alleyways are the focus of the photography in this book.
