Gold Rush In The Wild West The Biggest Gold Heist In Alaskan History: Claim Jumpers And Dirty Deeds

The Wild West is often romanticized for its untamed lands, fierce outlaws, and the lure of gold. But amidst the tales of bravery and adventure, lies a darker side that is seldom talked about - the world of claim jumpers and dirty deeds during the gold rush.

As prospectors flocked to California in search of their dreams, the competition over rich gold deposits sparked a wave of lawlessness and corruption. This article will delve into the depths of this underbelly, revealing the scandalous stories of claim jumpers and the dirty deeds they resorted to in their quest for wealth.

The Gold Rush: A Golden Opportunity

The year was 1848, and the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in California changed the course of history forever. News of the abundant gold deposits spread like wildfire, attracting people from all walks of life, yearning for a chance to strike it rich.

Amidst this frenzy, those who staked their claim on a piece of land that contained gold deposits were seen as the lucky ones - prospectors who had secured their path to a prosperous future. However, not everyone played by the rules, and a darker trend began to emerge - the rise of claim jumpers.

The Dark Side: Claim Jumpers Unmasked

Claim jumpers were individuals who illegally took over another prospector's claim without permission or through deceitful means. Their methods were as varied as they were cunning, ranging from forging documents to even resorting to violence and murder.

One infamous claim jumper was Jefferson "Devious" Davis, a smooth-talking con artist who traveled from town to town, preying on unsuspecting prospectors. Davis would befriend miners, gaining their trust before maneuvering them into selling their claims for a pittance or simply usurping their rights through fraudulent paperwork.

Another method employed by claim jumpers was the creation of intricate networks of corruption, involving local authorities and even judges. In some cases, these corrupt officials turned a blind eye to illegal claim transfers, allowing the culprits to evade justice and continue their nefarious practices unscathed.

The Dirty Deeds: Tales of Greed and Betrayal

The stories surrounding claim jumpers and their dirty deeds are like pages torn from a gripping novel. One such tale involves the infamous Smith Brothers Gang, a group of ruthless outlaws who specialized in stealing claims from hard-working prospectors.

Operating in the remote regions of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Smith Brothers concocted a devious scheme to claim the most lucrative lands. They would target miners who had struck gold and stalk them discreetly, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.

Once they identified their victims, the gang members would launch their attack, overwhelming the defenseless miners with sheer force. They unleashed an unprecedented wave of violence, sparing no one who dared to resist. Many innocent prospectors lost their lives at the hands of the Smith Brothers during their brazen claim-jumping endeavors.

The Vigilante Justice: Redemption and Deterrence

In the face of rampant claim jumping and the lack of effective law enforcement, the frontier communities took matters into their own hands. The rise of vigilante justice became a common response to curb the lawlessness that had gripped the gold mining regions.

Vigilante groups, often composed of disgruntled prospectors who had fallen victim to claim jumpers themselves, sought justice outside the confines of the legal system. These groups would capture, often violently, the accused claim jumpers and subject them to swift, "frontier-style" trials.

While the methods of these vigilantes were themselves questionable, their efforts did serve as a deterrent to potential claim jumpers. The fear of being caught and facing the vigilante justice became a powerful deterrent for those who contemplated resorting to dirty deeds.

Legacy and Lessons Learned

Claim jumpers and their dirty deeds left an indelible scar on the history of the gold rush. They exploited the dreams of honest prospectors and stained the reputation of the Wild West. However, they also served as a reminder of the extremes to which some would go in their pursuit of wealth.

The legacy of claim jumpers carries important lessons for society even today. It reminds us of the importance of upholding justice, respecting property rights, and ensuring that those who engage in deceit and manipulation are held accountable.

As we admire the courage and audacity of the miners who brought about the gold rush, let us not forget the dark side that lingers within the pages of history. Claim jumpers and their dirty deeds serve as a reminder that even amidst moments of great opportunity, humanity must remain vigilant against those who seek to exploit and deceive.

Enjoy a wild ride with Del and Gail Ackels and their friends and family

Note from Del: 46 years ago when my wife Gail and I started mining without much experience or knowledge of what we were getting ourselves into. Working in the engineering department of a subcontractor working for NASA/NOAA during the APOLLO lunar landings was about as far away from gold mining and making mud pies for a living as you can get!

Gail, a successful businesswoman with an international beauty supply company, was also caught in the same adventure. I guess you would call it the "call of the wild." We answered that call and enjoyed many years combating the elements in a very beautiful and hostile environment, reaping the benefits of a healthy life and fair remuneration.
We were never as happy as when we were dealing with the harshness of the weather and all the inherent problems into which a mom-and-pop mining company would run. Gold mining in the Brookes Range, 400 miles north of Fairbanks, civilization, and above the Arctic Circle, was our greatest adventure and challenge.

We thrived on the hardship, problem-solving, and excitement of life in a remote mining camp that could only be accessed by airplane in the summer. Building an ice road over the tundra in early spring before the thaw was the only way we could reach our camp was by land. Each spring, we would build a 100-mile ice road over the tundra from Coldfoot, AK, to bring in the summer's equipment and supplies at minus -60 F below zero.

Every year, building this ice road with heavy equipment and while living in a mobile camp was an adventure always filled with challenges and near catastrophes. Making our living gold mining was hard work but rewarding and great fun until we became victims of the Alaska courts and a big mining corporation.

Read the book and judge for yourself. Enjoy the ride!
