The Ancient Land of Traders and Nomads
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a country located in the Arabian Peninsula, bordering the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. It is a land rich in history, a tapestry woven with the threads of ancient civilizations, nomadic tribes, and ambitious traders.
The Early Inhabitants
Long before the discovery of oil, the land we now know as the UAE was home to various tribes and settlements. Archaeologists have found evidence of human habitation dating back to the Bronze Age, indicating that people have inhabited this region for thousands of years.

These early inhabitants were primarily nomadic tribes, moving from one oasis to another in search of water and grazing grounds for their livestock. They were skilled traders and resided in temporary settlements made from palm fronds, reeds, and stones.
Persian Influence and the Arrival of Islam
In the 7th century, the Islamic faith started spreading in the Arabian Peninsula. The ruling Persian Empire had a significant influence on the region, and Persian dialects were commonly spoken among the local populations.
With the rise of Islam, Arabia became a unified land under the banner of the new faith. Islamic civilization flourished, and Dubai, one of the modern-day emirates of the UAE, played a significant role in maritime trade.
The Arrival of European Powers
The Portuguese and Omani Rule
During the 16th century, European powers ventured into the Arabian Peninsula. The Portuguese occupied strategic ports along the coast, aiming to control trade routes to India and the Far East.
However, the Portuguese presence was short-lived. In the 17th century, the Omanis, led by the Al Bu Said dynasty, expelled the Portuguese from the Arabian Gulf. The Omanis established their rule over the coastal areas, including the future UAE emirates.
The Trucial States
Fast forward to the 19th century, the British Empire had gained significant influence in the region. The coastal emirates, known as the Trucial States, entered into treaties with the British government, securing their protection against potential threats.
These treaties, collectively known as the "Trucial States Treaties," established a strong relationship between the emirates and the British. The British maintained the defense and foreign affairs of the emirates while respecting their autonomy.
Formation of the United Arab Emirates
Unification Efforts
In the mid-20th century, the seven emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah sought closer collaboration and unity. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, played a pivotal role in these efforts.
After years of negotiations and discussions, the United Arab Emirates was officially formed on December 2, 1971. The late Sheikh Zayed became the President, while Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, served as the Vice President and Prime Minister.
Oil Discovery and Economic Transformation
The discovery of oil in the 1960s revolutionized the UAE's economy. The newfound wealth propelled the country into a period of rapid development and modernization. Infrastructure projects, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities transformed the UAE's landscape.
Abu Dhabi and Dubai became the economic powerhouses of the UAE, attracting international investment and becoming global trade hubs. The country diversified its economy, investing in sectors such as real estate, aviation, tourism, and finance.
Advancements in Education and Women's Empowerment
The UAE recognized the importance of education in building a prosperous and sustainable future. The government invested heavily in education, enhancing the quality of schools and universities, and providing scholarships for UAE nationals to study abroad.
Moreover, the UAE has actively promoted women's empowerment and gender equality. Women have taken on leadership positions in politics, business, and academia, contributing to the country's progress and development.
The UAE in the Modern World
A Global Business and Cultural Hub
Today, the UAE stands tall as a global business and cultural hub. Dubai, with its towering skyscrapers and world-class infrastructure, has become synonymous with luxury, innovation, and opportunity.
The country attracts millions of tourists every year who come to witness the grandeur of its modern cities, experience the richness of its cultural heritage, and explore its breathtaking landscapes.
Humanitarian Efforts and Global Diplomacy
The UAE is not only focused on its own development but also extends a helping hand to those in need around the world. It has actively participated in various humanitarian and development initiatives, providing aid and support to countries affected by natural disasters, armed conflicts, and poverty.
Additionally, the UAE plays a significant role in global diplomacy, fostering relations with countries around the world. It hosts international conferences, summits, and exhibitions, serving as a bridge between different cultures and civilizations.
The history of the United Arab Emirates is a testament to the resilience, vision, and determination of its people. From humble beginnings as traders and nomads to becoming a global powerhouse, the UAE has embraced change, innovation, and progress.
As we look towards the future, the UAE continues to strive for excellence and endeavors to make a positive impact on the world stage. The country's rich history shapes its present and inspires its pursuit of a brighter tomorrow.

The United Arab Emirates is a relatively young country in the Middle East, made up of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm Al Quwain. How did these seven separate emirates come together to form the United Arab Emirates?
This volume explores the long, rich history of these seven emirates, focusing on political history but also highlighting culture, society, economy, and religion. Chronologically arranged chapters examine major eras and turning points in history, such as antiquity, the rise of Islam, British trade, and the discovery of black gold: oil.
Readers will learn how today, most of the UAE's citizens are foreigners from other countries, as well as how much of the country's economy and livelihood depend on oil. An appendix of Notable People in the History of the United Arab Emirates serves to identify key players in the region's history, and an annotated bibliographic essay provides readers with sources for further research. Ideal for students, this volume is an important addition to the Greenwood Histories of the Modern Nations series.
