Have you ever found yourself captivated by a movie or deeply moved by a story on the big screen? The power of cinema lies not only in its ability to entertain but also its capacity to tap into the depths of our unconscious mind. Through the seventh art, we traverse the labyrinth of the human psyche, uncovering hidden desires, fears, and emotions that often remain buried within us.

From the pioneering works of pioneers like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung to the modern day psychoanalytic film theories, the concept of the unconscious mind has long fascinated both filmmakers and audiences alike. The very process of filmmaking itself mirrors the workings of the unconscious, with directors often drawing inspiration from their own dreams, fantasies, and personal experiences.

Psychological films have the unique ability to peel back the layers of our conscious mind and offer a glimpse into the vast realm of the unconscious. These movies take us on a transformative journey, challenging the boundaries of reality and blurring the line between the conscious and unconscious worlds.

Exploring Archetypes and Symbols in Film

Archetypes and symbols are powerful tools employed by filmmakers to communicate with the unconscious mind of the audience. These universal images and motifs, deeply rooted in our collective unconscious, evoke intense emotional responses and resonate with our deepest fears and desires.

For example, the portrayal of the hero archetype in films like "The Matrix" or "Harry Potter" taps into our own longing for transcendence and the quest for self-discovery. The symbol of the labyrinth, often featured in psychological thrillers like "Inception," represents the inherent complexity of the human mind and the exploration of its darkest corners.

By utilizing archetypes and symbols, filmmakers create a shared language that transcends cultural boundaries. This language speaks directly to our unconscious, allowing us to connect with the characters and narratives on a deeper level.

Dreams and Fantasy: Portals to the Unconscious

Throughout history, dreams and fantasies have been seen as gateways to the unconscious mind. Filmmakers often harness the power of dreams to explore hidden desires, repressed memories, and unresolved conflicts, enabling the audience to navigate the labyrinthine landscape of the human psyche.

One such exploration is seen in Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan," where the protagonist's dream sequences serve as a manifestation of her inner turmoil and psychological disintegration. These surreal and haunting scenes offer a glimpse into the depths of the unconscious, exposing the fragility and complexity of the human mind.

Similarly, fantasy films like "Pan's Labyrinth" by Guillermo del Toro transport us into a realm where reality merges with the unconscious. The juxtaposition of the fantastical and the mundane allows us to explore the complexities of human emotion and the blurred boundaries between dream and reality.

Subliminal Messages: Manipulating the Unconscious

Subliminal messages are another technique employed by filmmakers to influence the unconscious mind of the audience. These hidden messages, often embedded within the visuals or sound design of a film, bypass our conscious awareness and directly impact our emotions and perceptions.

One notable example is Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining." The meticulous use of visual cues, such as the repetition of geometric patterns or the placement of objects, creates an unsettling atmosphere that triggers subconscious responses in the viewer. These subliminal elements intensify the emotional impact of the film and leave a lasting impression on the audience.

Impact on the Conscious Mind: Catharsis and Self-Reflection

The experience of watching films that explore the unconscious often has a profound impact on our conscious mind. The emotional journey we undertake vicariously through the characters on screen allows us to confront our own repressed thoughts, fears, and desires.

As audience members, we often experience catharsis, a release of pent-up emotions and a sense of emotional purification. The very act of witnessing these psychological transformations on screen can prompt us to embark on our own journey of self-reflection and personal growth.

In , the seventh art, or cinema, provides a unique platform for exploring the depths of the unconscious mind. Through archetypes, symbols, dreams, and subliminal messages, filmmakers connect with our deepest fears, desires, and emotions. By engaging with these psychological films, we embark on a transformative journey that challenges our notions of reality and offers insights into the intricate complexities of the human psyche.

So the next time you immerse yourself in a movie, take a moment to consider the hidden depths it unveils and the impact it has on your unconscious mind. It is through the seventh art that we truly comprehend the enigmatic and mysterious workings of our own psyche.

Since the beginning of time, man has had fun through artistic manifestations, among them, plays. From the classical era to the present day, people watching plays, get involved and have fun with the plots taken to the stage.

With the creation of cinema at the end of the 19th century, theater did not cease to exist, but the staging of stories in theaters began to share space with the films projected on the big screens.

Parallel to the stories projected on the screens, the films often bring in their scenes the manifestation of the unconscious of their authors and directors. This content is also conveyed in the form of archetypes, which are part of the collective unconscious of a society.

Certain scenes depicted in a film may appear repeatedly in different film productions, written by the same author. This recurring theme (which is repeated) may be linked to a real experience of those who wrote a film scene, being inserted many times in an autobiographical and intentional way, or even derived from unconscious content of the author of the film, which come to the fore in the narratives of cinema in an unconscious way.

We can also mention the cases of subliminal insertion of themes that can influence the behavior and opinion of the viewers of a film, thus causing the consumption of products for example, without the public clearly realizing what is being conveyed. For this reason, and due to the possibility of influencing its viewers with fads, ideologies and forms of behavior, cinema ends up becoming a powerful tool in the formation of opinion with society.

The ebook The Unconscious through the Seventh Art brings the interpretation of films that have been successful in recent decades, as well as a list of 2000 films that address human behavior.
