The search for spirituality and religious guidance is an essential part of the human experience. It provides a foundation for moral values, a sense of purpose, and a way to cope with life's challenges. Religion has played a significant role in shaping cultures and communities worldwide. However, as times change and new ideologies emerge, it is crucial to critically analyze their impact.

In recent years, a new brand of religion has emerged within the black community, promising empowerment, success, and salvation. This article aims to shed light on the ways in which this new religion has betrayed black America and why it is imperative to reevaluate its teachings.

1. Abandoning the Historical Struggle

For centuries, black Americans have fought against racial injustice, seeking equality and justice for all. Religion served as a powerful tool during this struggle, providing hope, guidance, and unity. However, the rise of this new religion has shifted the focus away from the historical struggle. The emphasis is now on personal success and material gain, rather than collective liberation.

By promoting individualism and materialism, this new religion perpetuates a cycle of selfishness and detachment from the larger community. The principles of solidarity and social justice that were central to the civil rights movement are slowly being forgotten.

2. Ignoring Systemic Racism

One of the most concerning aspects of this new religion is its failure to address the systemic racism that still exists in America. While it claims to empower individuals, it neglects the larger structures of oppression that hinder progress for black Americans.

By focusing solely on personal empowerment and prosperity, this new religion ignores the systemic barriers that limit opportunities for black individuals. It fails to challenge societal norms and advocate for the eradication of racism. As such, it becomes complicit in perpetuating the very inequalities it claims to address.

3. Preying on Vulnerabilities

This new religion often preys on the vulnerabilities of its followers, promising instant gratification and quick solutions to complex problems. In a society where many black Americans face systemic challenges, such promises can be enticing.

However, this exploitation of vulnerabilities leads to disillusionment and disappointment when the promised results fail to materialize. By placing the blame on individuals for their perceived shortcomings, this new religion perpetuates feelings of guilt and inadequacy, further eroding self-esteem.

4. Undermining Authentic Spirituality

Authentic spirituality provides a moral compass and a sense of purpose that goes beyond personal gain. It encourages compassion, empathy, and social responsibility. However, this new religion often reduces spirituality to a transactional experience.

With its focus on material prosperity and instant gratification, this new religion undermines the true essence of spirituality. It neglects the importance of introspection, selflessness, and genuine connection with a higher power or a greater cause.

5. Dividing the Community

One of the most detrimental effects of this new religion is its contribution to the division within the black community. By promoting individual success as the ultimate goal, it encourages competition rather than collaboration.

Instead of fostering unity and solidarity, this new religion creates divisions based on socioeconomic status and material wealth. It perpetuates a hierarchy where those who have achieved prosperity are seen as more spiritually enlightened or superior.

While the search for spirituality is a personal journey, it is crucial to critically analyze the ideologies that emerge and their impact on communities. This new religion, with its emphasis on personal gain and detachment from social issues, has betrayed black America.

It is time to reclaim the essence of spirituality, rooted in authenticity, compassion, and social responsibility. By refocusing on the historical struggle for justice and addressing the systemic inequalities that still exist, black Americans can transcend the limitations imposed by this new religion and truly empower their community.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

New York Times bestselling author and acclaimed linguist John McWhorter argues that an illiberal neoracism, disguised as antiracism, is hurting Black communities and weakening the American social fabric.

Americans of good will on both the left and the right are secretly asking themselves the same question: how has the conversation on race in America gone so crazy? We’re told to read books and listen to music by people of color but that wearing certain clothes is “appropriation.” We hear that being white automatically gives you privilege and that being Black makes you a victim. We want to speak up but fear we’ll be seen as unwoke, or worse, labeled a racist. According to John McWhorter, the problem is that a well-meaning but pernicious form of antiracism has become, not a progressive ideology, but a religion—and one that’s illogical, unreachable, and unintentionally neoracist.

In Woke Racism, McWhorter reveals the workings of this new religion, from the original sin of “white privilege” and the weaponization of cancel culture to ban heretics, to the evangelical fervor of the “woke mob.” He shows how this religion that claims to “dismantle racist structures” is actually harming his fellow Black Americans by infantilizing Black people, setting Black students up for failure, and passing policies that disproportionately damage Black communities. The new religion might be called “antiracism,” but it features a racial essentialism that’s barely distinguishable from racist arguments of the past.

Fortunately for Black America, and for all of us, it’s not too late to push back against woke racism. McWhorter shares scripts and encouragement with those trying to deprogram friends and family. And most importantly, he offers a roadmap to justice that actually will help, not hurt, Black America.
