The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt: From the Decline of the New Kingdom to the Magnificent Saite Renaissance
When one thinks about ancient civilizations, Egypt is undoubtedly one of the first that comes to mind. The land of pharaohs, pyramids, and mummies has captured the imagination of people around the world for centuries. From the glory days of the New Kingdom to the period of turmoil and decline, followed by the remarkable Saite Renaissance, the history of Egypt is an epic tale of power, art, and survival.
The Fall of the New Kingdom
The New Kingdom of Egypt, also known as the Egyptian Empire, was a time of unprecedented wealth and cultural achievements. With powerful pharaohs like Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Amenhotep III, and Ramses II at its helm, Egypt was at its peak during this period. However, the seeds of its decline were sown long before.
One of the primary causes of the New Kingdom's fall was its excessive expansionism. Pharaohs sought to extend Egypt's reach far and wide, leading to the exhaustion of resources and the weakening of central authority. Additionally, internal conflicts, power struggles, and waves of invasions from external forces further destabilized the once-mighty empire.

With the death of Ramses XI, the last ruler of the New Kingdom, Egypt entered a period of chaos known as the Third Intermediate Period. During this time, foreign powers, including the Libyans, Nubians, and Assyrians, exerted their influence, and Egypt was divided into several smaller states.
The Turmoil and Decline
The decline of the New Kingdom brought about a decline in pharaonic power and a shift in the religious landscape of Egypt. The once-powerful priesthood lost much of its influence, and the people started turning to newer religious beliefs and practices. The rise of the cult of Amun-Ra, combined with the influence of foreign religions, marked a significant departure from the traditional Egyptian religious practices.
Furthermore, economic difficulties plagued the land, with a diminishing agricultural output and a decline in trade. The loss of important territories and trade routes further exacerbated the economic crisis, leading to increased poverty and general discontent among the populace.
It was during this time that foreign rule became a reality for Egypt. The Nubian king, Piye, successfully conquered Lower Egypt in the 8th century BCE, establishing the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty and marking the beginning of an era known as the Late Period.
The Saite Renaissance
Despite the tumultuous period, with foreign rulers and diminishing power, Egypt managed to undergo a remarkable rebirth during the Saite Renaissance. The Saites, hailing from the city of Sais in the Delta, brought stability and revitalization to the land.
Psamtik I, the founder of the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty, succeeded in uniting Egypt and driving out the Nubians. Under his rule, Egypt experienced a period of political stability and economic prosperity. Trade routes were reopened, and the construction of new temples and monuments flourished.
Moreover, Psamtik I encouraged cultural exchange and opened Egypt to foreign influence. Greek mercenaries and traders flocked to the land, bringing with them new ideas, art forms, and technologies. This cultural exchange between Greece and Egypt laid the foundation for the later Greco-Egyptian civilization that would emerge under the rule of Alexander the Great.
The Legacy of Ancient Egypt
The fall of the New Kingdom and the subsequent periods of turmoil and resurgence left a lasting impact on the history of Egypt. The decline of pharaonic power and the rise of foreign influence paved the way for a new chapter in Egyptian history. The divine kingship that had characterized ancient Egypt for millennia transformed into a more complex and diverse society.
Ancient Egypt's art, architecture, and knowledge influenced countless civilizations throughout history. The legacy of the pyramids, the temples, and the golden treasures of the pharaohs has fascinated archaeologists and historians for centuries. From the wonders of the Great Sphinx to the mysteries of the Valley of the Kings, Egypt continues to captivate the world with its rich and enigmatic past.

The story of Egypt from the fall of the New Kingdom to the Saite Renaissance is a tale of decline, chaos, and eventual rejuvenation. Despite the challenges it faced, Egypt held onto its cultural heritage and managed to rise again, leaving behind an enduring legacy. The rise and fall of ancient Egypt remind us of the cyclical nature of history and the resilience of human civilization.

During the half-millennium from the eleventh through the sixth centuries BC, the power and the glory of the imperial pharaohs of the New Kingdom crumbled in the face of internal crises and external pressures, ultimately reversed by invaders from Nubia and consolidated by natives of the Nile Delta following a series of Assyrian invasions.
Much of this era remains obscure, with little consensus among Egyptologists. Against this background, Aidan Dodson reconsiders the evidence and proposes a number of new solutions to the problems of the period. He also considers the era's art, architecture, and archaeology, including the royal tombs of Tanis, one of which yielded the intact burials of no fewer than five pharaohs. Afterglow of Empire is extensively illustrated with images of this material, much of which is little known to non-specialists.
