The First World War was one of the deadliest conflicts in human history, paving the way for the future of warfare. While trenches and infantry movements dominated the battlefield, a new form of warfare was emerging – armoured warfare. This article aims to delve into the fascinating story of armoured vehicles in the First World War, with a focus on the years 1916-1918. Through rare images of warfare, we will accompany soldiers in their mechanized journeys and witness the evolution of this revolutionary form of combat.

The Birth of Armoured Warfare

As the First World War progressed, it became evident that traditional tactics were inadequate to combat the machine guns and artillery barrages inflicting heavy casualties on infantry. The initial developments in armoured warfare were limited to crude vehicles like converted tractors and captured enemy tanks. However, it was the Battle of Flers-Courcelette in 1916 that marked the first significant use of tanks in a coordinated attack, setting the stage for a revolution in military strategy.

Our collection of rare images offers a glimpse into this pivotal moment. Witness the "Mark I" tank, Britain's first purpose-built armoured combat vehicle, crawling across the battlefield. The image immortalizes this technological marvel, striking fear into the hearts of enemy soldiers. These tanks were far from perfect, with numerous mechanical failures, but they represented a step towards innovation in warfare that would change the course of history.

The Evolution of Armoured Warfare

As the war progressed, armoured vehicles underwent rapid development. The British Mark IV tank, showcased in our collection, incorporated significant improvements such as better armor protection, more powerful guns, and increased speed. Witness the power and might of these behemoths rolling across the war-torn landscapes.

One notable development during this period was the of the Whippet, a lighter and faster tank that could outmaneuver enemy vehicles. The Whippet tanks were armed with machine guns and could travel at speeds of up to eight miles per hour. The collection boasts rare images of these agile machines, capturing their speed and deadly precision on the battlefield.

Armoured Warfare in the Trenches

One of the most challenging environments for armoured vehicles was the intricate network of trenches that defined the Western Front. Despite these obstacles, tanks proved to be versatile tools on the battlefield.

Our collection showcases the creativity and adaptability of soldiers as they incorporated tanks into trench warfare. Rare images depict tanks crossing trenches, their tracks crushing barbed wire obstacles, while soldiers provide support from the trenches themselves. These images provide a unique perspective on the challenges faced by tank crews and highlight their significance in breaking the stalemate of trench warfare.

Impact on the Modern Battlefield

The of armoured warfare in the First World War revolutionized military strategy and paved the way for future conflicts. Although tanks were in their infancy in the years covered by our collection, the impact they had on the outcome of the war cannot be underestimated.

Witness the transformation of warfare through rare images of armoured vehicles that would go on to inspire future generations of tanks. From the primitive Mark I to the advanced Mark IV and Whippet, each vehicle played a significant role in shaping the development of armoured warfare. The images of war that we present are a testament to the bravery and ingenuity of the soldiers who fought with these early tanks.

The First World War marked the birth of armoured warfare, and our collection of rare images offers a unique opportunity to delve into this transformative period of history. By exploring these glimpses into the past, we gain a deeper understanding of the innovation and strategic thinking that shaped future conflicts.

Armoured warfare evolved rapidly during the years 1916-1918, with tanks playing a vital role in breaking the stalemate of trench warfare. From the technological advancements of the Mark IV tank to the nimble Whippet, these vehicles provided a glimpse of what the future held for warfare.

Join us on a visual journey through this inflection point in military history, as we honor the brave soldiers who took part in armoured warfare during the First World War.

A hundred years ago, on 15 September 1916, on the Western Front during the Battle of the Somme, the tank made its debut on the battlefield. The first tanks were crude, unreliable, vulnerable weapons, but they changed the character of land warfare forever, and Anthony Tucker-Jones's photographic history of these pioneering armored vehicles is the ideal to them. In a selection of over 150 archive photographs he offers a fascinating insight into the difficult early days of this innovative new weapon, describing its technical history and its performance in combat. While the Battle of Cambrai in 1917 is often held up as the first large-scale tank battle, tanks had already served at Flers-Courcelette on the Somme, during the Nivelle offensive and the battles of Messines and Passchendaele. His book shows that the development of the tank was fraught with technical obstacles and battlefield setbacks. It was invented by the British and the French at almost the same time to help break the deadlock of trench warfare, and the British deployed it first in 1916. Belatedly the Germans followed the British and French example. The initial designs were continuously refined during two years of intense warfare. Finding the right balance between power and weight, getting the armament right, and working out the best tactics for tanks on the battlefield was a tricky, often deadly business.
