Concrete poetry, a captivating form of visual expression, emerged in the aftermath of World War II, encompassing a wide range of artistic creations. Combining the elements of typography, graphic design, and traditional poetry, this unique art form brings words to life through their visual appearance. Post-war modernist public art became the platform for these aesthetic innovations, offering a medium that captured the essence of an era defined by rebuilding, progress, and the exploration of new artistic pathways.

What is Concrete Poetry?

Concrete poetry, also known as shape poetry or visual poetry, breaks away from the traditional structures of written poetry and embraces a more dynamic approach. Rather than relying solely on the content or meaning of the words, concrete poetry takes into account their visual arrangement and physical embodiment.

The arrangement of words on a page is carefully designed to create a specific visual effect that complements and enhances the meaning of the text. By integrating graphical elements, such as different font sizes, colors, and spatial arrangements, concrete poets create a harmonious fusion of language and visual representation.

The Foundations of Concrete Poetry

The origins of concrete poetry can be traced back to the early 20th century, with roots in both the Dada and Futurist movements. Artists and poets such as Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Guillaume Apollinaire experimented with typographical innovations, utilizing various techniques to create visually striking compositions.

However, it was in the post-war years that concrete poetry truly flourished, finding a home within the public art realm. As cities worldwide recovered from the devastation of war, artists sought to reimagine public spaces and infuse them with new artistic energy. Concrete poetry became a powerful tool for transforming urban landscapes into vibrant artistic experiences.

Post-War Modernist Public Art

Post-war modernist public art emerged as a response to the destruction caused by World War II. Architects, sculptors, and artists sought to rebuild and revitalize cities, both physically and emotionally. Concrete poetry found a natural home within this movement, as its fusion of language and art directly addressed the need for new forms of communication and expression.

Public art installations provided an opportunity to engage with a wide audience, transforming everyday spaces into thought-provoking environments. Parks, plazas, and city squares became canvases for concrete poets to explore and experiment with the possibilities of their art.

The Beauty of Aesthetic Innovation

Concrete poetry's unique aesthetic innovation lies in its ability to combine visual impact with textual depth. The intricate arrangement of words on a page allows for multiple layers of meaning to be conveyed simultaneously, inviting the viewers to engage with the artwork on different levels.

Through experimentation with typography, spatial composition, and graphic design, concrete poets created visually captivating compositions, utilizing the entire page as a canvas. The resulting artwork blurred the boundaries between poetry and visual art, pushing the limits of creativity and expanding the possibilities of artistic expression.

Examples of Concrete Poetry in Public Spaces

Concrete poetry found its home in various public spaces, enriching the urban landscape with artistic interventions. Let's explore some notable examples of post-war modernist public art that embraced the principles of concrete poetry:

1. Chicago Picasso - Chicago, USA

The iconic Chicago Picasso sculpture, unveiled in 1967, serves as a prime example of how concrete poetry transformed public spaces. Its abstract form, with interlocking planes and contours, captures the spirit of innovation and progress characteristic of the post-war era. The sculpture's bold design invites viewers to interpret its meaning individually, encouraging a personal connection with the artwork.

2. "Penetrável" - Hélio Oiticica - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Hélio Oiticica's "Penetrável" installations exemplify the dynamic nature of concrete poetry. These interactive structures invite visitors to physically engage with the artwork, blurring the boundaries between viewer and art. Through vibrant colors and the innovative use of modular structures, Oiticica created immersive environments that redefined the viewer's relationship with the artwork.

3. "Alphabet of the Magi" - Roy Ascott - Malmö, Sweden

Roy Ascott's "Alphabet of the Magi" installation in Malmö offers a captivating example of how concrete poetry can redefine public spaces. Combining language and technology, this kinetic artwork features a mesmerizing interplay of words and lights. The constantly moving text engages the viewers in an ever-evolving dialogue, highlighting the transformative power of concrete poetry within the public art realm.

The Legacy and Influence of Concrete Poetry

Concrete poetry, with its optimism and innovation, continues to have a significant impact on contemporary artistic practices. Modern artists and designers draw inspiration from the principles of concrete poetry, infusing their creations with elements of text, typography, and visual composition.

The legacy of concrete poetry lives on through the contextualization of words within our ever-evolving urban landscapes. From street art murals to multimedia installations, concrete poetry's influence can be seen in a multitude of art forms, guiding the exploration of new collective and individual narratives.

The emergence of concrete poetry within the post-war modernist public art movement brought about a powerful union of language and visuals. Its impactful innovations in typography, composition, and graphic design reshaped our understanding of poetry and art, ultimately transforming public spaces into thought-provoking environments.

Whether we encounter the beauty of concrete poetry through iconic sculptures or interactive installations, its legacy continues to inspire and captivate. This unique art form invites us to contemplate the limitless possibilities of artistic expression, ultimately encouraging a deeper connection with the urban landscapes that surround us.

A visual journey through the public sculpture, art and architecture of Modernist Britain from Simon Phipps, author of Brutal North and Brutal London

At the end of the Second World War, Britain's cities and communities desperately needed rebuilding. As new houses and public spaces were planned, communal engagement was considered to be vital to social recovery. Public art was thought to provide the means to create this engagement.

This era of post-war progressive civic planning gave rise to some of the UK's most important pieces of public art. From Richard Serra's Fulcrum in London's Broadgate to Barbara Hepworth's works across the country, to the less well-known Cumisky mural in Skelmersdale and the vivid Schottlander shapes in Warwick, these works of art have become familiar companions; backdrops to British lives.

There is an urgency to catalogue these works as much of Britain's Modernist public art is at risk - not to mention that which has already been removed, vandalised or left to crumble. In Concrete Poetry, Simon Phipps photographs, explores and celebrates Britain's post-war public art, placing it in context and considering its future. Complete with incredible photography, an by Phipps, an essay by Darren Umney and detailed captions, Concrete Poetry honours not only of the artworks themselves, but also the community spirit of the age from which they came.

Designed by creative agency Studio Small, Concrete Poetry is a uniquely beautiful book that is as inventive as its subject matter. Please note this is a fixed-format ebook with colour images and may not be well-suited for older e-readers.
