William Arthur Jewell came of age in the early 1900's while his family lived in Western Pennsylvania. When America entered World War I in 1917, he was a graduate student at both the Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University in New York. Jewell was part of the first wave of young men to volunteer for officer's training. This collection of letters to his mother captures his transformation from a philosophical youth to an experienced soldier in the field of combat at the Western Front. Letters from his comrades to his parents after he was killed-in-action reveal the respect he earned as a soldier, his determination to fight to the end and the sacrifice he made for his country.
