Citizens are the foundation of any democratic society. As members of a community, they possess certain rights and freedoms that should be protected and respected. The concept of treating citizens as free and equal is based on the idea that every individual is entitled to a fair and just society, regardless of their personal traits or socio-economic status.
This article explores the key arguments and ideas surrounding the importance of treating citizens as free and equal, examining the benefits it brings to society as a whole.
1. Human Dignity and Personal Autonomy
One of the fundamental reasons for treating citizens as free and equal is the recognition of their inherent human dignity. All individuals possess a unique set of interests, beliefs, and aspirations that should be valued and protected. By treating citizens as free and equal, society affirms their right to personal autonomy and self-determination.

Respecting citizen's personal autonomy means allowing them to make decisions that affect their own lives without unwarranted interference. This empowers individuals to pursue their own happiness, pursue education and career opportunities, and contribute to the overall well-being of society.
2. Social Justice and Equality
Treating citizens as free and equal is essential for promoting social justice and equality. Equality ensures that all individuals have fair and equal access to opportunities, resources, and benefits within society. It recognizes that everyone's contribution is valuable and should be acknowledged, irrespective of their background or circumstances.
By valuing equality, society aims to eliminate discrimination, bias, and prejudice that may hinder an individual's rightful participation in various aspects of life, such as education, employment, and politics. Treating citizens as equals creates a level playing field and fosters a sense of solidarity among diverse groups.
3. Rule of Law and Fair Justice System
A society that treats its citizens as free and equal is one that upholds the rule of law and ensures a fair and just justice system. The rule of law guarantees that all individuals are subject to the same laws and regulations, including those in positions of power.
A fair justice system ensures that everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status, receives equal protection under the law. It guards against discrimination and abuse of power, promoting trust and confidence in the legal system.
4. Independence and Civic Engagement
Treating citizens as free and equal encourages independence and active civic engagement. By recognizing individuals as equals, society acknowledges their capacity to make informed decisions and participate in democratic processes.
Engaged citizens actively contribute to their communities, volunteering, voting, and holding their representatives accountable. This active participation strengthens democratic institutions and promotes a sense of ownership and belonging among citizens.
5. Economic Prosperity and Innovation
By treating citizens as free and equal, society fosters an environment that allows for economic prosperity and innovation. Equality and freedom allow individuals to explore their talents and potential freely, which in turn leads to economic growth.
When individuals have equal opportunities to access education, job opportunities, and resources, they can contribute positively to the economy. A diverse and inclusive society encourages creativity, innovation, and collaboration, resulting in social and economic progress.
Treating citizens as free and equal is not only ethically and morally important, but it also brings immense benefits to society. By recognizing and respecting each individual's inherent dignity and autonomy, promoting social justice and equality, upholding the rule of law, encouraging civic engagement, and fostering economic prosperity, a society can create a foundation for a fair, just, and harmonious community.
Embracing the ideas and arguments behind treating citizens as free and equal is crucial for building a more inclusive and flourishing society, where every individual can thrive and contribute to the greater good.

Liberal neutrality has two underlying intuitions and therefore two distinct elements. On the one hand it refers to the intuition that there are matters the state has no business getting involved in. On the other hand it is motivated by the idea that the state ought to treat citizens as equals and show equal respect for their different cenceptions of the good life. This book defends this two-fold understanding of neutrality with reference to Rawls’ conception of citizens as free and equal persons. Treating citizens as equals requires the state to grant its citizens equal political rights and also to ensure that these rights have “fair value”. Given the danger that cultural bias undermines the equal standing of citizens, the state has to ensure procedures of political decision making that are able to take citizens’ different conceptions into account.
