If you're a teacher, you are well aware of the challenges that come along with teaching reading to young learners. Reading is a fundamental skill that forms the foundation of a child's education, and being able to effectively teach reading is crucial for their academic success.
Have you ever encountered a reading block? It's that moment when a child seems to hit a wall and struggles to progress in their reading abilities. It can be frustrating for both the child and the teacher, but fear not! We have a step-by-step method that will help you unlock the reading block and ensure your students become confident and proficient readers.
Step 1: Assess and Identify the Reading Block
The first step in helping a struggling reader is to assess and identify the specific areas where they are facing difficulties. Is it decoding words, understanding comprehension, or a combination of both? Use formal and informal assessments to gather data and pinpoint the root cause of the reading block.

Once you have identified the problem areas, you can tailor your teaching approach accordingly. For example, if decoding words is a challenge, focus on phonics and phonemic awareness activities. If comprehension is the issue, incorporate strategies such as predicting, summarizing, and asking questions.
Step 2: Create a Structured Reading Program
Implementing a structured reading program is essential for breaking the reading block. This program should consist of a well-sequenced curriculum that covers all essential reading skills. It should include phonics instruction, vocabulary development, fluency practice, and comprehension activities.
Divide the reading program into manageable units or lessons, ensuring that each lesson builds on the previous one. Use a variety of resources and materials, including books, worksheets, interactive online tools, and educational games. Incorporate both individual and group activities to cater to different learning styles and promote peer interaction.
Step 3: Provide Explicit Instruction and Practice
Explicit instruction involves breaking down reading skills into small, manageable chunks and explicitly teaching each component. For example, if teaching phonics, start with individual letter sounds and gradually introduce blends and digraphs.
Model the desired skills or strategies and provide clear explanations. Use visual aids, gestures, and mnemonics to reinforce learning. Engage students in hands-on activities, such as word building or sentence construction. Regularly assess their progress and provide immediate feedback.
Step 4: Foster a Love for Reading
Creating a positive and nurturing environment that fosters a love for reading is crucial to help overcome the reading block. Cultivate a classroom library with a diverse range of books catering to various interests and reading levels. Allow students to choose books they are passionate about and provide opportunities for independent reading.
Read aloud to your students and model good reading habits. Encourage discussions and book talks to develop critical thinking skills and promote a love for literature. Organize reading challenges, book clubs, or author visits to make reading an engaging and interactive experience.
Step 5: Evaluate and Adjust Instruction
Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of your teaching methods and adjust them as needed. Analyze student performance, collect data, and make curriculum modifications accordingly. Use formative assessments to monitor progress and identify areas that require further support.
Collaborate with colleagues and participate in professional development opportunities to stay updated with the latest research and best practices in teaching reading. Adapt and refine your instructional strategies based on feedback and new insights.
Teaching reading is a challenging task, especially when faced with a reading block. However, by following these step-by-step guidelines, you can help unlock the reading potential in your students and guide them toward becoming confident and proficient readers. Remember to assess, create a structured program, provide explicit instruction, foster a love for reading, and constantly evaluate and adjust your teaching methods. With patience, perseverance, and the right approach, you can conquer the reading block and set your students on a path to lifelong learning and success.

The Reading Blocks Program breaks the whole process of learning to read into 32 individual blocks. Each block has new material but also reviews previous material to ensure more effective learning.
There are MANY Unique Components of Reading Blocks. Including:
A Simple and Effective reading program that works!
The program includes all materials, lessons, games, activities, mini decodable readers and more!
A complete step by step, multisensory, phonics based, reading program, which can be customized for any age learner and any learning difference.
An original “Wall of Knowledge” scope and sequence which allows the instructor and learner to “see”, and understand exactly where they are on the path of learning to read, as well as exactly where they are going.
Fun activities and unique reading material for each reading block that is perfectly matched to the skills being learned at that level. This takes all the guess work out of finding appropriate material to use for practicing new reading skills.
An easy to follow format which does not require months of training and a huge financial commitment.
An exclusive method that can be used by Teachers, Parents, Tutors and Reading Specialists alike; no training or background is necessary.
A multisensory program that is based on Orton-Gillingham methodology.
An easy, fast, and effective assessment which is crucial for designing a customized reading plan for each unique learner.
The ability to begin the program at a level appropriate to each learners’ needs, based on the assessment. This component saves time and minimizes boredom.
This program can be used in Kindergarten to Grade 3 when learning to read and in higher grades when there are gaps in a person’s reading skills. Reading Blocks can also be used with adults struggling to read even though the content is for younger ages.
1000 Fry Sight Words are Included and integrated into the program.
Each block only contains skills which were taught and practiced in a previous Block. Since sight words do not always follow phonics rules but are necessary for fluent reading, they are included in each block. The sight words were chosen according to the skills being taught in that block as well as frequency of use.
Controlled Text - to ensure your success.
As a Reading Specialist, it was always frustrating using a reading program that included so many words that were too advanced for the level of the reader and never strategically taught. The reader would become frustrated and self-esteem would plummet. This program uses very controlled text and every skill is taught first and then reviewed periodically throughout the program. This ensures a high level of success for the reader and you.
