Now, let's embark on our journey through the eye and orbit.
The Eye - A Window to the World
The eye is a complex optical system that enables us to see the vibrant colors, the intricate details, and the subtlest of movements. Composed of several structures working in harmony, this incredible organ deserves our attention.
At the front of the eye, we find the cornea, a transparent dome-shaped layer that acts as a protective barrier and helps to focus incoming light. Behind the cornea lies the iris, which controls the size of the pupil and regulates the amount of light entering the eye. The lens, situated just behind the iris, plays a crucial role in focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye.
The retina is a complex layer of specialized cells that convert light into electrical signals to be sent to the brain. Within the retina, the macula is responsible for central vision and allows us to see fine details, while the optic nerve transfers these signals to the brain for interpretation.
Surrounding the eyeball, we have the extraocular muscles that help move the eye in various directions, allowing us to explore our surroundings effortlessly.
The Orbit - A Protective Housing
Located within the skull, the orbits are bony sockets that cradle and protect our eyes. Each orbit consists of various bones, including the frontal, zygomatic, sphenoid, and ethmoid bones, creating a sturdy enclosure for the delicate eyeball.
The orbital cavity contains a number of vital structures, such as the lacrimal gland responsible for tear production, which keeps the eye lubricated and nourished. Tear production is crucial for maintaining clear vision and preventing eye discomfort.
The orbital fat pads provide cushioning and support to the eye. They help absorb shock and protect the eyeball from injury, maintaining its position within the orbit.
Additionally, blood vessels and nerves pass through the orbit, delivering essential nutrients and information to the eye and surrounding structures.

Anatomy of the Eye and Orbit was written as an electronic textbook to make use of the new tools and smart technology available for teaching anatomy, histology, and embryology of the eye. My goal with this text was to provide ophthalmology residents and optometry students with the essential anatomy required to competently practice their respective professions. Although ophthalmology and optometry differ in their scope of practice, the anatomical knowledge required to practice both professions is the same.
Clinical correlations are included in this text to demonstrate the practical application of anatomy, histology, and embryology to the practice of ophthalmology and optometry. This text also includes images of dissected human cadavers so that the reader may have a better appreciation of the anatomy of the eye and orbit. I performed all dissections in this text unless noted otherwise and fully attest to their accuracy.
I welcome comments and suggestions from ophthalmology residents, optometry students, ophthalmologists and optometrists, for improvements in the next edition.
