The Rise and Fall of the New England Mob

The New England Mob, also known as the Patriarca crime family, once ruled over the organized criminal activities in the New England region of the United States. Led by prominent mob bosses like Raymond Patriarca and Francis Salemme, this ruthless criminal syndicate had a stronghold on the streets throughout the mid-20th century.

However, as law enforcement agencies intensified their efforts to dismantle organized crime networks, the New England Mob faced a relentless war on many fronts. Prosecutions, witness testimonies, and undercover operations all played a crucial role in unraveling the inner workings of the criminal empire.

Inside the war on the New England Mob, brave law enforcement agents risked their lives to gather intelligence, build cases, and ultimately bring down the powerful figures at the top. This captivating account pulls back the curtain on the undercover operations, wiretaps, and surveillance techniques used to take down these notoriously elusive criminals.

The Fall of Raymond Patriarca

Raymond Patriarca, the patriarch of the New England Mob, had a reign of terror that lasted for decades. Known for his iron grip on the criminal empire, he maintained control over various illegal activities, including racketeering, bribery, and murder.

However, the walls started closing in on Patriarca in the 1960s and 1970s. As law enforcement agencies intensified their efforts to combat organized crime, Patriarca found himself in the crosshairs. Through wiretaps and surveillance, the authorities gathered substantial evidence that directly linked Patriarca to numerous criminal activities.

Finally, in 1984, Patriarca was convicted on multiple charges and sentenced to ten years in federal prison. This marked a pivotal moment in the war on the New England Mob, as the chief orchestrator of criminal operations was finally held accountable.

The Turning Point: Witness Testimonies and RICO

The war on the New England Mob took a major turn when key members of the criminal family began turning against their own. Witness testimonies became a critical instrument in bringing down the crumbling empire.

Under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, which was enacted in 1970, prosecutors had a powerful weapon at their disposal. RICO allowed for the prosecution of entire criminal organizations rather than just individual members. This new legal tool played a vital role in dismantling the New England Mob, as top mobsters faced mounting pressure from their own ranks to cooperate with authorities.

Witness protection programs were established to ensure the safety of those who chose to provide crucial testimonies. But this did not come without risks. The mob, notorious for its code of silence and retribution, posed a constant threat to those who dared speak out.

The End of an Era

By the 1990s, the war on the New England Mob had largely succeeded in dismantling the once-powerful criminal organization. With the convictions of several key mob leaders, the empire began to crumble. The constant pressure from law enforcement and rival factions further weakened their grip on power.

Today, remnants of the New England Mob still exist, but they are a mere shadow of their former selves. The once-dominant criminal organization has been significantly diminished, thanks to the relentless efforts of law enforcement agents, witness testimonies, and the use of groundbreaking legislation.

The war on the New England Mob serves as a reminder of the tireless pursuit of justice and the determination to dismantle organized crime. Although the battle may never be completely won, the stories of those who fought against the mob highlight the courage and resilience needed to bring down even the most sophisticated criminal enterprises.

In It’s Just the Way It Was: Inside the War on the New England Mob and other stories, Joe Broadmeadow and Brendan Doherty take you inside the investigations, covert surveillances, and murky world of informants in the war against Organized Crime.

Make no mistake about it, it was a war targeting the insidious nature of the mob and their detrimental effect on Rhode Island and throughout New England.
Indeed, the book reveals the extensive nature of Organized Crime throughout the United States.

From the opening moments detailing a mob enforcer’s near death in a hail of gunfire to the potentially deadly confrontation between then Detective Brendan Doherty and a notorious mob associate, Gerard Ouimette, this book puts you right there in the middle.

Most books on the mob tell a sanitized story of guys who relished their time as mobsters. As Nicholas Pileggi, author of “Wiseguys,” put it, “most mob books are the egomaniacal ravings of an illiterate hood masquerading as a benevolent godfather.”

This is not that kind of book. This is the story of the good guys.

It’s just the way it was.
