Golden Era: Flourishing Jewish Communities

During the Islamic Golden Age (8th to 13th centuries CE), Jews in Iraq experienced a period of relative peace and prosperity. They enjoyed advancements in knowledge, significant contributions to literature, and thriving commercial enterprises.

Babylonia, the center of Jewish academic life, became globally renowned for its academies, producing renowned scholars, such as Rabbis Saadia Gaon and Hai Gaon. The academic achievements of Jewish intellectuals during this era left an everlasting impact on the world of Judaism as well as the wider academic community.

Challenges and Changing Tides

The 20th century marked a period of significant change for Jews in Iraq. Following the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of British rule after World War I, Iraqi Jews increasingly faced discrimination and persecution fueled by rising nationalist sentiments.

The mid-20th century witnessed the rise of Arab nationalism, coupled with the formation of the State of Israel. These events further intensified tensions and hostility towards the Jewish community in Iraq. Attacks on synagogues, the imposition of restrictive laws, and public acts of violence forced many Jews to leave their homes and seek refuge elsewhere.

Mass Exodus and the Disappearance of a Vibrant Community

In the early 1950s, over 120,000 Iraqi Jews fled their homeland, leaving behind a rich cultural heritage. The majority of them sought refuge in the newly established State of Israel and other countries, drastically reshaping the demographics of modern Iraq.

Today, only a handful of Jews remain in Iraq, compared to the thriving community that once existed. The disappearance of this vibrant community has left a void in the country's cultural identity, and their legacy serves as a reminder of the diverse tapestry that once characterized Iraq.

A Story of Hope and Resilience

Despite the trials and tribulations faced by Jews in Modern Iraq, their story is one of resilience and determination. The journey of Iraqi Jews stands as a testament to the human spirit and their unwavering commitment to preserving their traditions and cultural heritage.

The legacy of Jewish communities in Iraq continues to be celebrated through their various contributions to art, music, literature, and cuisine. This enduring legacy serves as a bridge between the past and present, reminding us of the rich diversity that once thrived in Iraq.

The history of Jews in Modern Iraq is a remarkable tale of triumphs and challenges. From their arrival during the Babylonian exile to the mass exodus in the mid-20th century, Jews in Iraq have played a vital role in shaping the society and culture of the region.

By delving into this captivating history, we gain a deeper understanding of the multicultural fabric that once flourished in Iraq. It is through remembering and honoring the history of Jews in Modern Iraq that we can appreciate the richness and diversity that defined the country for centuries.

Although Iraqi Jews saw themselves as Iraqi patriots, their community—which had existed in Iraq for more than 2,500 years—was displaced following the establishment of the state of Israel. New Babylonians chronicles the lives of these Jews, their urban Arab culture, and their hopes for a democratic nation-state. It studies their ideas about Judaism, Islam, secularism, modernity, and reform, focusing on Iraqi Jews who internalized narratives of Arab and Iraqi nationalisms and on those who turned to communism in the 1940s.
As the book reveals, the ultimate displacement of this community was not the result of a perpetual persecution on the part of their Iraqi compatriots, but rather the outcome of misguided state policies during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Sadly, from a dominant mood of coexistence, friendship, and partnership, the impossibility of Arab-Jewish coexistence became the prevailing narrative in the region—and the dominant narrative we have come to know today.
