Pushing boundaries, challenging norms, and nudging the funny bone – that's the life of a humor writer. For two decades, I have embarked on a relentless journey, armed with wit, sarcasm, and a bottomless pit of puns. Join me as we delve into the world of award-losing humor writing.

The Genesis of a Laugh Riot

It all began in the summer of '99—the birth of an insatiable obsession to make people laugh through the written word. Armed with a typewriter and a stash of pun-filled jokes, I started my journey, completely oblivious to the rollercoaster of a ride that awaited me.

The first few years were an uphill battle. Rejections flooded my mailbox, dousing my enthusiasm and threatening to snuff out my writing flame. But as they say, "fall seven times, stand up eight." So I stood up, dusted myself off, and embraced the failures with a grin, ready to take the next step.

The Humorous Jungle: Finding Your Voice

In a world saturated with comedy writers, finding your voice becomes the key to standing out. Blending witty observations with absurdity, I toiled to create a unique style that would set me apart. Crafting punchlines, dissecting everyday situations, and turning mundane experiences into tales of hilarity became my daily routine.

From satirical commentaries on politics to absurd fictional stories, I explored every avenue to discover my niche. And in due course, I found my footing – a sweet spot between sharp wit and relatable anecdotes.

Walking the Tightrope: The Art of Humor

Humor is a delicate art form. Crafting words that ignite laughter requires impeccable timing, wordplay, and understanding of human psychology. The challenge is to hit the sweet spot between gentle chuckles and uproarious laughs without crossing the line into offense.

One must always be ready to adapt, learning how to pivot swiftly in an ever-changing world. What worked yesterday may not work today, so keeping a finger on the pulse of society is crucial. Staying relevant, knowing your audience, and constantly evolving is the recipe for success.

Embracing the "Award-Losing" Title

While accolades and recognition are the holy grail of any writer, I proudly wear the "award-losing" title. It represents the unwavering pursuit of humor, even when met with disappointment. For behind each rejection lies an opportunity to refine and improve.

A creative life riddled with constant rejection may test one's patience, but humor writers are a resilient bunch. We understand that success and recognition are not defined by shiny trophies but by the smiles and laughter we evoke in our readers.

Lessons Learned and Laughters Shared

Two decades of award-losing humor writing have bestowed invaluable lessons upon me. Perseverance, tenacity, and the ability to find humor even in the darkest moments are some of the gems I've gathered along the way.

I've had the privilege of connecting with fellow writers, sharing tales of rejection, and learning from their experiences. It's through these connections that we keep the spirit of humor writing alive, constantly inspiring one another to pen even greater works of hilarity.

Looking Ahead: The Never-Ending Journey

As I look into the future, I see another twenty years of award-losing humor writing stretched out before me. The journey never truly ends, for humor is a never-ending source of joy and connection.

So, here's to the countless rejections, the endless hours spent hunched over a keyboard, and the continuous pursuit of laughter. Join me as we embark on this laughter-filled adventure, leaving a trail of chuckles and grins in our wake, ready to conquer the world with words one joke at a time.

Longlisted, 2018 Leacock Medal for Humour

A hilarious collection of Jack Knox's best-loved humour columns.

In this side-splitting follow-up to the bestseller Hard Knox: Musings from the Edge of Canada, Jack Knox presents his best writing, marking his twenty-year anniversary as a humour columnist at the Victoria Times Colonist, the newspaper that made him a household name. Revisiting his most—and least!—popular columns, Knox weighs the potential benefits of a marijuana-like drug that reduces anxiety in rats; reports on the “Bush Boys,” a pair of brothers who emerged from the forest near Vernon with a dubious story about being raised in the wilderness (they were actually from suburban California); and muses over fictional characters such as Barbie, Ken, Harry Potter, and Archie growing up and facing the grim realities of life. He also includes a hilarious collection of “nastygrams” (a.k.a. hate mail) that he’s received over the past two decades. Opportunity Knox goes to show that humour comes when you least expect it. From politics to weather, sports to entertainment, Knox finds the bizarre in everyday life and the ordinary in what should by all accounts be bizarre.
