Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a part of the elite team that protects our nation from terrorists? Join me on a thrilling journey as I share my experiences of serving as an FBI agent, specializing in counterterrorism operations, while also being a helicopter pilot and a certified sniper.
The FBI, or Federal Bureau of Investigation, is the premier law enforcement agency in the United States. Its primary goal is to protect and defend the country against terrorist threats, both domestic and international. As a young recruit, I was eager to contribute to the agency's mission and embarked on a career that would be filled with adrenaline-pumping adventures and moments of intense focus and precision.
The Training and Preparation
The path to becoming an FBI agent is rigorous and demanding. From physical fitness tests to extensive background checks, the selection process is designed to identify individuals with exceptional skills, unwavering dedication, and the ability to handle high-pressure situations. After successfully passing the initial assessments, I began my training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

The academy is a crucible of challenges where agents are molded into well-rounded professionals. Here, I honed my investigative skills, learned interrogation techniques, and improved my marksmanship. The rigorous physical training pushed me to my limits and prepared me for the demanding nature of the job.
My Role as a Helicopter Pilot
One unique aspect of my career in the FBI was my role as a helicopter pilot. Equipped with state-of-the-art aircraft, I undertook missions that required aerial surveillance, pursuit, and extraction. From urban environments to remote wilderness, I navigated through treacherous conditions to support ground operations.
The ability to rapidly respond to threats and provide aerial support was invaluable in our quest to neutralize dangerous individuals and safeguard innocent lives. Flying at high speeds, hovering over targets, and undertaking daring maneuvers were all part of my day-to-day responsibilities.
The helicopter serves as a force multiplier, allowing our team to cover vast areas quickly and efficiently. Whether it was locating clandestine terrorist cells or assisting in search and rescue operations, the helicopter became an indispensable tool in our fight against terrorism.
Becoming a Certified Sniper
Being a helicopter pilot was not my only role; I also trained extensively to become a certified sniper. Mastering the art of precision shooting was a challenging endeavor that demanded patience, discipline, and an unwavering focus.
A sniper's role in counterterrorism operations is crucial. From vantage points high above, I observed and analyzed targets, providing valuable intelligence to agents on the ground. Being able to eliminate threats from a safe distance not only protected our team but also prevented collateral damage.
The commitment to constant practice, relentless training, and the pursuit of perfection was integral to my success as a sniper. The feeling of accomplishing a mission with a single, well-aimed shot was immeasurable.
Life on the Frontlines
Working as an FBI agent in counterterrorism operations meant that danger lurked around every corner. The pursuit of individuals involved in nefarious activities required us to operate in high-risk environments, with little room for error.
My days were filled with intelligence analysis, briefings, and meticulously planning operations. Each mission required careful coordination with a team of experts, including investigators, analysts, and fellow agents. We relied on each other's expertise and trust, knowing that our lives depended on seamless teamwork.
As a helicopter pilot and certified sniper, I had the unique opportunity to combine various skills to tackle complex challenges. Whether it was providing aerial cover during a raid, extracting hostages from hostile locations, or apprehending high-value targets, every operation was a test of our abilities and nerves.
The Price of Service
While thrilling and rewarding, this career also came with sacrifices. The constant threat to national security meant that personal time took a backseat. The dedication and commitment required to safeguard innocent lives demanded long hours, frequent deployments, and time away from loved ones.
However, being part of an elite team that prevented devastating attacks and saved countless lives made every sacrifice worth it. Knowing that our efforts made a difference in the world, and that we helped uphold the values we hold dear, was the ultimate reward.
My life as an FBI agent, terrorist hunter, helicopter pilot, and certified sniper has been a whirlwind adventure. From the intensive training at the FBI Academy to the heart-stopping moments on the frontlines, this career path demanded resilience, determination, and a commitment to protecting the nation.
As I reflect on my experiences, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside brave men and women who share the same dedication to safeguarding our country. Being a part of the FBI's counterterrorism operations has shaped me into the person I am today, instilling in me a sense of duty, perseverance, and the belief that even the smallest actions can make a significant impact.
If you have ever dreamed of an action-packed career that combines adrenaline, precision, and the pursuit of justice, consider a path in the FBI. The journey may be challenging, but the rewards are immeasurable.

For decades, movies and television shows have portrayed FBI agents as fearless heroes leading glamorous lives, but this refreshingly original memoir strips away the fantasy and glamour and describes the day-to-day job of an FBI special agent. The book gives a firsthand account of a career in the Federal Bureau of Investigation from the academy to retirement, with exciting and engaging anecdotes about SWAT teams, counterterrorism activities, and undercover assignments. At the same time, it challenges the stereotype of FBI agents as arrogant, case-stealing, suit-wearing stiffs with representations of real people who carry badges and guns. With honest, self-deprecating humor, Steve Moore’s narrative details his successes and his mistakes, the trauma the job inflicted on his marriage, his triumph over the aggressive cancer that took him out of the field for a year, and his return to the Bureau with renewed vigor and dedication to take on some of the most thrilling assignments of his career. Steve Moore is a former agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation who had assignments as a SWAT team operator, sniper, pilot, counterterrorist, and undercover agent. He received multiple awards from the Department of Justice before his retirement in 2008, has written two episodes for an FBI-themed TV series, and is a regular commentator for Headline News. He lives in Thousand Oaks, California.
